A Sanctuary caring for ponies and horses unwanted, neglected, abandoned or abused in Newfoundland and Labrador

Miracle Cloud

His beginnings and survival were a miracle thanks to HAPPA-NL and a 35 year old mare known as Cloudy Girl.

Cloudy Girl adopted Miracle Cloud and kept him warm and even fed him.

The Horse and Pony Protection Association of Newfoundland and Labrador is the only organization in Eastern Canada that provides care for equines in need.

Our organization is a registered charitable organization which operates the Hopeall sanctuary.  Our budget is lean and all funds raised through donations go directly to providing care for our horses and ponies.

The Hopeall Sanctuary provides much needed care for horses and ponies that have become either unwanted, neglected, abandoned, abused or harmed.

The equine sanctuary is at the southern end of the community of Hopeall, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.  It is about a one hour drive from St. John’s and can be easily found on Highway 80 (the scenic Baccalieu Trail).  The quiet pasture and surroundings lie near the beautiful community of Hopeall, Newfoundland.  Our sanctuary covers about 25 acres with two barns /stables and other smaller structures.

A volunteer board of directors provide guidance and volunteer extensively with a group of other volunteers to operate both the association and our sanctuary.  A comment often made which quickly resolves any issue is quite simply summed up with “What about the Horses and Ponies… What’s best for them?”  Doing what is right and never turning an equine in need away are two fundamentals that guide our board and our volunteers.

The sanctuary was established in 1986 by Dr Andrew Ferguson Fraser for the care of unwanted and sick ponies and horses. Since 1986 the organization has transformed from AFFET to NL Pony Care to HAPPA-NL.

We fed ourselves with their labor
We fought wars from their powerful backs.
Astride them still, we play and celebrate
And now, they need our help.

HELP HAPPA-NL HELP PONIES LIKE HOLLY

A beautiful 9 year old Welsh Pony mare named Holly was a recent resident at our HAPPA-NL Hopeall Sanctuary.  She arrived in June 2009 and had a number of health conditions making her quite uncomfortable.  She suffered for some time with health problems and we worked hard to rehabilitate her.  We did everything we could to help her and bring her back to good health.  She received vet care, medication, expert farrier care and daily care from our sanctuary care team .

Holly has since been adopted by a horse health care professional in Massachusetts.

We need your help and donations to provide care for more ponies like Holly.  Providing expert care costs money and we survive only on donations.  Please give generously to HAPPA-NL so that we can continue to rescue and provide care for horses and ponies.

Please take a moment to look at the Help Holly page for more information about Holly.

Text Box: RESCUE - REHABILITATE - REHOME
Text Box: HAPPA rescues horses and ponies that need our help. Sadly there are too many neglected, abused and abandoned equines in our province. We continue to see many brutal instances of neglect and mistreatment within Newfoundland and Labrador.
Once we have performed the rescue and have taken possession of the horse or pony, the second step is rehabilitation. Our Sanctuary Care Team are horse experts who provide amazing care to our residents. The rehab process varies in terms of both time and intensity depending on the condition upon arrival and the treatment. Due to the graphic nature of some of our findings we have chosen to show the ‘after’ pictures on the web site. Should you want proof and wish to see the turnaround stories with picture proof, please email us.
We find great new homes for our horses and ponies. We check and re-check potential homes and verify that the folks know the commitment and are comfortable with the care, requirements and responsibility.
At HAPPA, the horses and ponies need your help and donations to provide care for more cases of abuse, neglect and abandonment. Providing expert care costs money and we survive only on donations. Please give generously to HAPPA-NL so that we can continue to rescue and provide care for horses and ponies.
