2010 HAPPA Barn Fundraising Campaign

The current barn has been at or over capacity for the past 18 months.  2009 was a record year with more cases than ever recorded in the past.

This increased activity and reliance on HAPPA-NL to intervene on neglected, abused, unwanted and lonely horses and ponies has caused an immediate need for a much larger and better equipped facility at our Hopeall Sanctuary.

HAPPA-NL operates the only equine sanctuary and rescue shelter in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The current main barn (small red structure on the right on the picture above) can accommodate up to eight horses or ponies in standing stalls.  This structure measures about 16’X20’ and will remain as an overflow at peak times and as a storage area.

We have a hay barn and a small baby barn.  The most horses and ponies we have ever accommodated at the Hopeall Sanctuary was 14.  This was for a short period of time as the barn structures just could not accommodate the horses and ponies for any duration.

The new barn is an absolute necessity.  We presently have 7 equines at the HAPPA-NL Sanctuary.  We regularly know of 10 to 20 horses and ponies in numerous places / situations across the province that require intervention and relocation.  We constantly receive calls and are trying to resolve all cases as quickly as possible however the current barn facilities are limiting the numbers of equines we can rescue and accommodate.

The new barn will measure approximately 30’ X 100’ and will have approximately 20 box stalls and a quarantine /sick bay.  We will ensure the new barn is built to house the horses and ponies safely and with as much comfort as possible.

Our current facility has electricity and a small hand dug well.  This well supplies good clean water reliably for only about 9 months of the year.  We have freezing problems in the coldest winter months and in 2009 our well went dry from mid July until mid September.  During times when we have no water on our site, we rely on the help of volunteers to truck barrels of water to our facility.  It is our goal to have a proper well dug and have running water in the new barn.

We are sure once we build it we can do more for many more horses and ponies in need.  Every dollar puts us closer to the goal of opening a larger and better barn / stable / rescue shelter.

Fundraising will continue through to the time of construction which is planned commence by late summer 2010 to be ready for next winter.
